Water + Aluminum and Gallium = Hydrogen
As I have done in the past, I would like to highlight another exciting energy source. This new process has great potential for giving the hydrogen fuel cell a real shot at working. There would be no need for hydrogen fueling stations. The vehicles could create their own hydrogen as needed.
Basically, Aluminum is combined with Gallium and then formed into pellets. Now all you need is a tank of regular ol' tap water. Drop the pellets into the water, and voila - you are in the business of splitting water into its elemental parts. As a byproduct you get Aluminum oxide, which can be easily turned into regular Aluminum with a minimum of energy expended.
I like that the scientist that got this working wears an eye patch. Arr, matey.
Let Jerry Woodall share the method to his madness. Check out his PowerPoint presentation here (he narrates for you).
You can also read about it here, at PHYSORG.COM
Or you can listen to him talk about it with Ira Flatow, on Talk of the Nation: Science Friday, from NPR. Just follow the rabbit, here.
