I wanted to share some pictures I took while inspecting some underground vaults at work with you all. The underground is a place that very few people ever get to see - that's why I want to show you. Sometimes the lights work down there, and sometimes they don't. The air is surprisingly fresh down there. A plus for this wintry time of year, is that the vaults with transformers in them are a comfortable 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the equipment in these underground rooms is about 55 years old, or more. All the folks who installed it have long since retired. Some have even taken the big sleep.
Things like this are what I enjoy most about my job. It feels like gaining membership into a small fellowship of modern catacomb explorers. I'll get around to posting all of my photos from my journey into the Underworld (just did it. click here for more pics) - and you won't even have to eat any pomegranate seeds (although they are delicious).

Ok. Hades.
Great Pictures MPL. 55+ years old... Wow!
Man. I take a long time to get back to comments. Sorry.
Yeah. Most of the stuff in these vaults was somewhere on the order of 50 or more years old. I even got to see an old, idle transformer that is a twin to one that failed and exploded in San Francisco a couple of months back. It was this large, cast iron, riveted together monstrosity of a transformer. All lead sheathed cable. No one in our office even knows how it would operate.
That's what I love about this job. I get to see all the coolest, old machinery.
