Significant Events: Line construction in Division Mike completed with continued widening, improvement and mop-up. Remarks: Air support still needed in Division Whiskey. Watershed values at risk are in the Devils Gulch drainage which is a major tributary to the Wild and Scenic Merced River; also the Chowchilla river drainage, which supplies the Eastman Reservoir. If significant fire damage occurs in these areas, there will be high potential for excessive siltation and degradation of water quality. Continued demob of resources planned for operational period. The evacuation warning for the residents in the Ponderosa Basin is planned to be lifted at 1800 on 7/2/08. Observed Fire Behavior: Moderate fire activity, primarily burning in interior islands in Division W. Remainder of the fire had smoldering with minimal fire activity. Planned Actions: Line construction and improvement with mop up and patrol. Division Mike is completely tied in. Efforts will be concentrated on Division Whiskey. Continue rehab planning and implementation. Continue demob of resources. The resources demobed today have been reassigned to fires in both south and north areas of the state. |

Oliver - Over?
It's looking like we're seeing the end of the Oliver Fire - and I couldn't be happier. The threat to families living in Ponderosa Basin seems to have passed for now. The fire is under control, at least enough to send resources to other fires. Unfortunately, the fires in the Devil's Gulch area will leave the area bare, resulting in silty waters downstream on the Merced River. My thanks to all the brave firefighters working on this, and the other wildfires in California.
